But to get a better idea of average CTR, you need to look at your industry. On Google Search, the average CTR is 2.4% for consumer services yet only 1.66% for eCommerce. The average cost per click depends on your industry and the platform you are advertising on. As a quick reminder, cost per click (CPC) is the price advertisers pay for each click in your PPC campaigns. It’s a key digital marketing metric which shows you the performance of your campaigns.

So, what should you be aiming for? Start by looking at the average CPC for your industry. This helps you make sure you’re not over- or underspending on your campaigns. Across all industries, studies suggest an overall average of $2.69 per click on Google search network and $0.63 on the display network. But there are more competitive industries that tend to soar above this, like legal and consumer services. They both spend $6+ per click on average.

However, you should never look at CPC alone. For example, when the dollar figure for each click seems extremely steep, look at the overall cost per acquisition. Let’s say a click costs $50, but that click converts to $1,000 of new revenue – the ROI is phenomenal. On the other hand, if you're capturing thousands of clicks at less than $1, but barely any are converting to customers, your profit margins will shrink.

So, when setting your CPC benchmark, first understand how your industry will influence your budget. Then work out what you can pay while still having the opportunity to make a good profit.

But the question is, what happens when you do find your CPC is far too high to stay profitable? That’s when you need to evaluate your quality score. There’s a direct correlation with a higher quality score and lower CPC.
